John Paul Jackson: "Deepening Your Relationship With God"

Living in deep communion with the Holy Spirit isn’t something that happens overnight. It’s actually a lot like falling in love.

Is there such a thing as love at first sight? Well, there’s instant attraction, yes. There’s instant fascination, yes. All of these emotional responses are very important because they compel you into the real thing--the true-blue, ever-deepening, unexplainable, unending love that artists throughout history have attempted to capture on paper, canvas, or musical score, but they have not been able to fully do so.

Just like falling in love with a person, falling into true love with the Spirit of God takes time, focus, and commitment. There are several different ways you can practice the presence of God and deepen your love relationship with Him. The possibilities are endless. One mind-boggling, simple way is by realizing--and believing--how much He loves you (1 John 4:19). The following exercise will help you do that.

Set Aside One Hour To Be Still And Pray

Ask the Lord to tell you what He wants you to know about yourself. Write down what you hear Him saying to you--the quiet thoughts that come to your mind. Nothing is too outlandish. You are not being egotistical; you’re listening for the Lord’s purpose, His heart, His tender affirmations of you. This simple exercise will change your life. It will open your eyes to the depths of His heart and how prominent your place is in it. You matter to God. Most of us have a small understanding of that, but few of us actually live like we believe it.

I Asked God What He Thought Of Me

Several years ago, I was flying back on a corporate plane from Las Vegas to Dallas-Ft. Worth. All the VPs and other pe
ople were joking and harassing each other about how great Vegas was--while I had spent most of my time in the hotel room. But during that return flight, I asked God what He thought of me, and I still have the eight pages He gave me in return.

In the middle of the flight, God so overwhelmed me with His love that I was weeping. I was in the tail of the airplane, writing as fast as I could write and praying, “God, don’t let any of those guys turn around and see me back here!”

Now, twenty-five years later, every single thing on those eight pages has come true. At the time, I thought, I don’t want anybody to ever see this because no way is this going to happen. There’s just no way this is going to happen. But twenty-five years later, it has all come true.

Fall In Love With Him; Let Him Woo You

One of the first--and vitally crucial--ways to deepening your relationship with the Lord is taking Him at His Word. Fall in love with Him; let Him woo you. Let Him court you (Hosea 2:14). Let Him speak great, amazing things over you--things that seem too great, too amazing. But believe them, because everything God says is fact; it will happen.

Ask God to tell you what He thinks of you. His answer will coincide with Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you . . . thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”
